Certificates and hangtags record what a supplier claimed at some point upstream in the supply chain, not what physically ends up in the finished garment. Once a fabric is spun, dyed, and sewn, telling a blend’s exact fiber ratio apart by eye or touch becomes almost impossible, which is precisely why blends see the highest failure rates of any category.

The three most common issues regulators found were fibers listed correctly but at the wrong percentage, cheaper fibers substituted without disclosure, and fibers named on the label that weren’t present at all. Mislabeling isn’t just a consumer trust issue, it undermines recycling too.

Textile recyclers rely on knowing exactly what fibers are present to sort and process garments correctly, and researchers have warned that the growing volume of hard-to-separate synthetic-natural blends could leave more than 3,400 million tonnes of unrecyclable textile waste accumulated by 2030 if separation technology doesn’t catch up.

If a garment’s real fiber content doesn’t match its label, it enters recycling streams under false information, and the sorting or reprocessing that follows is compromised before it even begins.

How to Actually Check What You’re Buying

Look past the word on the tag and check for independent verification. Certifications such as GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) or OEKO-TEX require lab testing rather than self-reported claims. Be skeptical of trendy plant names like ‘bamboo’ or ‘banana fiber’ used loosely; ask whether the product is the raw fiber or a chemically processed version of it, since the two are legally and practically different materials. And treat blended items, especially ones purchased online, with extra scrutiny, since that is exactly where regulators found the highest failure rates.
